IFBLS 2018 were held in Florence, Italy in September. But what are the expectations and hopes for IFBLS 2020? We asked five biomedical laboratory scientists.

DR. EWANG ANSELM AKUME, president of Cameroon Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists

Are you coming to IFBLS’ congress in Copenhagen?

I was so delighted when it was announced that Copenhagen will host it next time. So I had to meet with the Danish national president Mr. Bert and he told me I am very welcome to be in Copenhagen.

What are you looking forward to in Copenhagen?

From the videos that was shown yesterday at the chief delegate meeting I will like to visit all these beautiful areas apart from attending the congress.

What are your primary expectations to the scientific program in 2020?

The scientific program should be an improvement. I was disappointed this year. I was a poster judge but there were no posters for me to evaluate. I think any congress should be an improvement.

Copenhagen is the city of bicycles. Do you know how to ride one?

I don’t know. I have to learn it before come to Copenhagen.

METTE BREHM JENSEN, lecturer at University College Absalon in Denmark. Teaches microbiology and molecular medicine

Are you coming to IFBLS’ congress in Copenhagen?

Of course I am.

What are you looking forward to in Copenhagen?

I am looking forward to Denmark being the host and presenting our country. I am proud of what the Danish medical laboratory scientists can, and therefore I am looking forward to presenting the profession.

What are your primary expectations to the scientific program in 2020?

I would like a little more about education – of students mostly – but also about further education for biomedical laboratory scientists that are already working. We are also trying to develop that part of our school.

Copenhagen is the city of bicycles. Do you know how to ride one?

Yes I do. I ride a bike every day.

HSIN-JU YANG, student in her senior year and about to graduate. Participate in Student Forum in Firenze

Are you coming to IFBLS’ congress in Copenhagen?

I am still in my program of master and I come from the sponsor of the union, so I don’t know. As you know it is a very far flight from Taiwan to Copenhagen so it is a pressure for me on the financial part.

But would you like to come?

Yeah! It’s fine to meet friends world wide.

What are you looking forward to in Copenhagen?

One week (as here in Firenze. ed.) is very little to get to know the differences between the educations for biomedical laboratory scientists in different countries. I would like to go further and deeper into that.

What would be your primary wish to the scientific program?

Ah … Virology. Certainly virology. I am doing my thesis in virology. Here it is mostly about hiv and HPV. I would like to know more about other viruses.

Copenhagen is the city of bicycles. Do you know how to ride one?

Of course. We Taiwanese all know how to ride a bicycle from childhood.

DAVID MEI, biomedical laboratory scientist working in the neurogenetic field at the mayor hospital in Florence

Are you coming to IFBLS’ congress in Copenhagen?

I would like very much. But I don’t know if I can afford the expense for the charge. It is very expensive for us.

What are you looking forward to in Copenhagen?

I would like to see some science that can be produced by the biomedical laboratory scientists. I think we have to interrogate more on the typical approach to our profession and push it more towards research.

What are your primary expectations to the scientific program in 2020?

The scientific program is very important to make the congress more attractive. I think it should focus more on different careers in different specialities.

Copenhagen is the city of bicycles. Do you know how to ride one?

Yes, I have been there. There is a lot of bicycles. Yes and probably I will come from Italy to Copenhagen by bike if I come.

ANNE LINDGREEN BERNDT, new elected president of IFBLS from 2018-2020

Are you coming to IFBLS’ congress in Copenhagen?

Of course I am. I would come there anyway whether I was president or not. I am sure it will be an excellent congress and I am already looking forward to it.

What are you looking forward to in Copenhagen?

I know from the Nordic congresses that the scientific program will be excellent with many good speakers and now with an international crowd to recruit speakers from. And coming to Copenhagen is always a treat.

Why is it a treat?

Copenhagen is lively, exciting, fun, full of beautiful design and energy.

Do you know how to ride a bicycle?

I do! I do! And I always wear a helmet.
